Vilhelm Hedberg

Founder, eKar

Vilhelm Hedberg moved to Dubai in 2009 to pursue and implement his creative business and logistics concepts. With over ten years of experience in Quality Management and Logistics, his first role was at Wilhelmsen Lines, overseeing the shipment of over one million automobiles throughout the Middle East. In 2009, he co-founded and later successfully exited QMS Global FZ LLC, an ISO certification company. ¬†Following three years of concept development, 2016 saw the launch of ekar, the Middle East’s first pay-as-you-go hourly car rental service. The idea was to create an easy-to-use self-drive mobility platform allowing residents and tourists to book cars conveniently parked throughout the city from the comfort of their laptop or smartphone. The same year, ekar was selected by the RTA Dubai as the provider for 100 vehicles carshare project and secured other key clients, including Saudi Aramco, Emirates Airlines, and Etihad Airways. Since then, Vilhelm has successfully raised over 30 million USD for ekar’s expansion and pivoted the business to a pure mobility tech company connecting fleet owners and OEMs to renters with a seamless digital rental and leasing platform. Today, ekar is the Middle East’s first and largest personal mobility platform, providing users on-demand access to a network of thousands of vehicles via its mobile app. ekar is car rental simplified, without the hassle of being bound to a single location such as a rental kiosk. Instead, users can pick up and drop off the car at any location and at any time while paying a fraction of the cost of a ride-hailing or a taxi service. The company’s flexible pricing structure means users can choose to pay per minute, hour, daily, or weekly depending on their needs, with prices starting as low as 60 fils per minute. More than 200,000 customers use the multi-country service in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. ekar users have booked an impressive 1.4 million trips to date! In 2021, ekar launched its Self-Drive Super app and ekar Subscription service, allowing users to book economy or luxury cars for a period of up to nine months with no down payment or long-term commitment. The service followed the launch of ‘ekar Fleet
