The appeal of Open RAN is about disaggregating hardware and software for open interfaces to offer more market competition resulting in more choice, lower costs and improved network performance. But the ongoing debate is far from settled. Tradeoffs between open standards with greater compatibility and a closed and controlled ecosystem with barriers to entry is never a clear-cut case. Where do we stand in the MENA region when it comes to and what is the operator appetite for disaggregated and interoperable networks? What is the potential cost savings versus operational risks such as system integration, security and inadvertent bottlenecks.
